The next meeting is on Tuesday 2nd June 2026.
We meet on the first Tuesday of the month ('The Kitchen', 198 Watford Road) to sample a variety of reasonably priced wines, potentially with a theme:
e.g. Wines from a specific region, vegetarian wines,
Same grape from various regions, kosher wines,
Same wine various prices, wines from ALDI etc etc
Ideally, we want to have a group size of 24 members who will be divided up into 12 groups of 2, with each pair running approximately one session per year. Don’t worry if you don’t bring a partner along, we will pair you off with someone; it will not be onerous and we don’t want long winded descriptions!!
Each taster will be of 30ml, giving a total of 180ml (if you actually drink it all!).
The idea is to have some fun and be sociable.
The costs will be £5 paid in advance. Please note that there is an initial joining fee of £5 to cover equipment etc.
Each pair will be allocated the same budget for their 6 bottles and can spend it as they wish.
Due to the costs involved we really need you to attend most if not all of the sessions.
The group is currently showing as full (waiting list) but please don't let that deter you from applying to join it. We don't know if you are interested in joining unless you apply - and we will do our best not to keep you on the waiting list for very long!
LAST MEETING:
May 2026
It was our fourth anniversary this month and as Cliff Richards says “Time flies and the days slip away, time flies and I wish it could stay” and the years have certainly flown by.
To celebrate this occasion 19 members of the wine appreciation group descended upon ‘The Kitchen’ not knowing what was to happen. Taking a playing card on entry they were randomly seated at one of four tables.
The evening began with a platter of sandwiches and wine.
- Ventozela Alvarinho, Portugal, 12.5%, RRP £13 we paid £11.50
- Nebbiolo Volpi, Italy, 13.5%, RRP £14 we paid £12.50

Both wines were well received by our experienced and dedicated members who are now well on their way to being Croxley Green sommeliers!
After enjoying the convivial conversations and the food we then took part in a competitive and educational quiz. This consisted of three rounds (with 10 question in each round) and resulted in a very close finish. Three tables tied with 21 points each and the winning table achieved 24. This was a very popular quiz, put together by John and Michele and included the technical use of a soundbar!
The first round was all about wine (to see what we have learnt over the last four years):
- What is the most widely planted grape in the world? (Cabernet Sauvignon)
- Mendoza is a wine region in which country? (Argentina)
- True or False. Champagne can be made using both red and white grapes. (True)
- What grape is Beaujolais made from? (Gamay)
- What is Australia’s most popular grape with notes of olive and blackberry and juicy, spice-driven characteristics? (Shiraz)
- What is Cremant? (French sparkling wine: not champagne)
- Which country produces the most wine each year? (Italy)
- What is the popular aromatic white grape widely grown in New Zealand? (Sauvignon Blanc)
- Which country holds the title for the oldest wine production?
Greece, China, Georgia (Georgia)
A great way to celebrate our fourth anniversary and special thanks to Michele & Rose for organising.
